Preparing Your Child for Nursery: A Gentle Guide
Tips from child development experts and experienced mums on making the nursery transition smooth.
Dr. Noor Hassan

Start Early
Begin talking about nursery 2-3 weeks before. Read books about going to school. Drive past the nursery and point it out.
Build Independence
- Practice putting on shoes
- Let them eat lunch independently
- Encourage water bottle use
- Practice goodbye routines
The First Day
- Keep the morning routine calm
- Pack a comfort item (small toy, family photo)
- Keep the goodbye short and confident
- Don't sneak away — always say goodbye
Managing Separation Anxiety
It's completely normal for children (and parents!) to feel anxious. Most children settle within 2-3 weeks.
What Mums Say
"The first week was hard, but by week three he was running in without looking back." — Layla, mum of 2
