Best Pram for Dubai Heat: How to Choose One for the UAE Summer

The short answer: for a newborn in the UAE, pick a pram or a 2-in-1 with a lie-flat carrycot, a large canopy you can leave open, and a fold that fits your boot. Skip the blanket over the top, however tempting at noon. The rest of this page is how to check each of those in a shop.

Pram, stroller or buggy: what is the difference

A pram (often sold as a pram stroller) has a lie-flat carrycot for the early months. A stroller sits upright and suits older babies and toddlers. A buggy is the light, quick-fold kind, best as a back-up or a travel stroller.

A newborn needs to lie flat. Bugaboo's own guide points to a 2-in-1, a bassinet plus a seat on one frame, so the same buggy carries her from week one to the toddler years. If you want one purchase rather than two, that is the shape to look for.

Why heat changes the choice

Most pram advice is written for cool countries. Here the stroller is in a car park at 2pm, then a mall, then a pavement. Three things decide whether it works in summer: shade, air and what the metal does in the sun.

• Shade: a big canopy that reaches low. Look for a stated UPF rating. The Mamas & Papas Armadillo, for example, lists a UPF 50+ hood
• Air: a canopy you can open, mesh panels, a seat that is not pressed flat against a solid back
• Surfaces: buckles and straps that are not bare metal

Do not cover the pram with a blanket

It looks like shade. It is the opposite. A children's hospital in California (CHOC) warns that a blanket blocks the breeze and traps heat, and can push the temperature inside a stroller past 100 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 minutes. The Lullaby Trust in the UK gives the same warning.

What they suggest instead: keep the canopy open, point the opening away from the sun, and clip on a portable fan or a sunshade. These are guidance from overseas bodies, not a UAE ruling, so if your baby is very young or unwell, ask your paediatrician what is right for your family.

Check on her every 10 to 15 minutes

CHOC advises a look every 10 to 15 minutes. Flushed skin, fast breathing, sweaty hair or extra fussiness mean she is getting too warm: move somewhere cooler and shaded straight away. The Lullaby Trust adds a simple check, the back of the neck or the tummy.

Before you buckle her in, touch the straps and any metal with your own hand. In a car that has been parked in the sun, metal gets hot enough to burn.

Weight and fold: test it in your own boot

The ad says "compact". Your car decides. The Mamas & Papas Armadillo says its fold "fits in the boot of a Mini" and weighs 9.3 kg, which is a useful number to compare, though the page showed it out of stock on 6 October 2026. Take the dimensions of your own boot and ask to fold the pram yourself, one-handed, with a bag on your arm. If you cannot do it in the shop, you will not do it in a car park at 40 degrees.

What a pram costs in the UAE

Prices vary widely. On 6 October 2026 the Mamas & Papas UAE range of prams, strollers and buggies ran from AED 149 to AED 6,400. Their Ocarro 2 pushchair was AED 3,950 and the compact Vardo AED 2,950, before any code. Prices change, so check the page on the day.

Try before you buy
