Weeknight Family Dinners in the UAE: When a Meal Kit Is Worth It
When a meal kit saves a busy family time and money, when it doesn't, what to check before you subscribe, and four dinner plans that work without any box.

Are meal kits worth it for a family in the UAE? They are when you would otherwise order takeaway or throw food away, and when your children will eat most of the menu. They are less worth it if you already shop to a plan, cook in bulk or feed several small, fussy eaters. Here's how to tell which week you're in.
When a meal kit saves you time
The time you save is the thinking and the chopping. Ingredients arrive portioned with a recipe card, so there is no list to write, no midweek supermarket run and no half bunch of coriander wilting in the fridge. On nights with swimming, homework and a late partner, that can be the difference between cooking and ordering in.
When it probably doesn't
- Your children eat a short list of things and the menu rarely overlaps
- You already batch cook on the weekend
- You have a cook or household help who shops and preps
- Your evenings are so unpredictable the box sits unopened
A kit you skip cooking is the most expensive dinner of the week.
What to check before you subscribe
- Portions: plans are sized per person. Do two young children count as one adult or two? Try the smaller plan first
- Children's tastes: read a few weeks of the menu, not only the first one
- Allergies: look for allergens listed on every recipe card. If your child has a diagnosed allergy, their doctor's advice comes first
- Delivery days and areas: will someone be home, and is your emirate covered?
- Skipping and cancelling: can you pause a week without a fee?
- Deposits: some services charge a refundable deposit for cool bags
How to compare cost per portion with a supermarket shop
Pick three dinners your family already eats. Add up what the ingredients cost on your usual shop, including the things you buy in larger packs than the recipe needs, and divide by the number of portions you actually eat. Then compare that with the kit's cost per serving for the same number of people, after any discount and before it ends. Be honest about the takeaway you order when there's no plan: that belongs on the supermarket side too.
The food waste question
Portioned ingredients can help here. ne'ma, the UAE's National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, says food waste at home often comes from overbuying, over-catering and stockpiling, and the UAE has committed to halving food loss and waste by 2030. A summary of ne'ma's first national household survey puts the share of food prepared that is wasted at 38%, costing AED 6 billion.
Four weeknight plans that work without a kit
- Cook once, eat twice: a double batch of mince, lentils or roast chicken on Sunday becomes tacos, pasta and wraps
- A theme per night: pasta Monday, rice bowl Tuesday, eggs Wednesday. Children often like knowing, and you stop deciding
- A fixed shopping list: keep one list of the ten things you always run out of, and order it on the same day each week
- Build-your-own plates: put out a protein, a grain and chopped vegetables and let everyone assemble their own, which gives a fussy eater some control
Partner offer: Spring Feeling
This section is in partnership with Spring Feeling. The advice above does not depend on it.
Spring Feeling is a meal kit service delivering in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain. You choose 2 to 5 people and 3 to 7 recipes a week, ingredients come pre-chopped with recipe cards, and each card lists the main allergens. Deliveries are split across the week, and you can skip a week or cancel. On 29 September 2026 its plan page showed 5 recipes for 2 people at AED 470 a week before discount (AED 47 a serving), free delivery and a refundable AED 49 bag deposit.
With code SF116 at Spring Feeling, new customers get 50% off their first and second orders, then 20% off orders three to nine (about two months). There are free gifts along the way too: an apron and tote bag with the first order, salt and pepper grinders with the fourth, and a Damascus knife with the twelfth. Check the discount at checkout before you pay.
Something to try this week
Write down what you cooked, ordered and threw away for five nights. That list tells you whether a kit fills a gap. Worth reading alongside this one: grocery delivery vouchers, the new school rules and evenings at home and questions for a new nanny. More savings on our deals page.
