Baby Loss Support in the UAE: Where to Find It During Baby Loss Awareness Week

Baby Loss Awareness Week runs 9 to 15 October. A gentle page on who in the UAE can hold you after pregnancy or baby loss, and the Love Through Loss events.

If you have lost a baby, or a pregnancy, this page is for you. It gathers the people in the UAE who offer support after loss, and the Love Through Loss GCC events during Baby Loss Awareness Week (9 to 15 October). Read as much or as little as feels right today.

What Baby Loss Awareness Week is

It is a week set aside each October for anyone touched by pregnancy or baby loss: a miscarriage, a stillbirth, a baby who died soon after birth, a pregnancy ended for medical reasons. The organisers describe it as a safe space to share and to feel that you are not alone, and they are clear that there is no right or wrong way to remember a baby.

The week started in the UK as a single day on 15 October 2002 and became a week in 2003. It ends with the Wave of Light: at 7pm local time on 15 October, people around the world light a candle for every baby who has died. In the UAE, that happens at 7pm Gulf time.

Love Through Loss GCC

Love Through Loss is a collective of communities and advocates across the region. It supports families who have lost a baby at any stage, from conception to infancy, and helps the people around those families offer kinder care. Their site is lovethroughlosssupport.com.

Their own pages list the October plans below. Two details are still marked to be confirmed on their site, so check there before you go.

The October events

  • Wednesday 14 October: Sound Healing. Time and place to be confirmed by Love Through Loss.
  • Thursday 15 October: a full day of online sessions on Zoom, from an 8:45am welcome through to a 6:00pm session, each with its own registration link. Topics include talking about a baby who has died, termination for medical reasons in the Gulf, recurrent loss and living siblings.
  • Thursday 15 October, 6:45 to 7:15pm: a Virtual Global Wave of Light on Zoom, candles at 7pm. It is a meeting, so your sound and camera can be on or off.
  • Saturday 17 October: an in-person Afternoon of Remembrance at Nature Escapes, Al Barari. Directions

The online day is free, and you can join one session or several. Registration for each session is on the schedule page. The same page has recorded sessions to watch any time, among them mindfulness in grief and journalling through grief, plus a downloadable healing journal.

Support that carries on after the week

Love Through Loss keeps a list of UAE support on its Support page. The names on it include IVF Support UAE, TFMR Mama's (for termination for medical reasons), Small and Mighty Babies, Still a Mum, Twins Plus Arabia and The Prepared Pineapple. Two are worth a closer look:

  • Rainbow Pregnancy and Parenthood UAE is a monthly group for women who are pregnant, or have had a baby, after a loss. Joining starts with a short phone call with one of the facilitators, so you can ask your questions first. Write to admin@sage-clinics.com.
  • Lala Langtry White is a birth and bereavement doula in Dubai who offers voluntary, compassionate care through miscarriage, pregnancy and neonatal loss. Her site is lalalangtrywhite.com.

If you would like to talk to someone privately

Two Dubai clinics describe counselling after pregnancy loss on their own pages. Thrive Wellbeing Centre offers individual therapy, couples therapy and support groups after miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal loss (thrive.ae). American Wellness Center in Dubai Healthcare City offers trauma-informed support after miscarriage and traumatic birth, including for the fear that can come with a future pregnancy (americanwellnesscenter.ae). Both are paid services, mumma has no arrangement with either, and these are not recommendations, only places that say they can help. If you are struggling to cope, your own doctor can point you to someone too.

If someone you love has lost a baby

You do not need the right words. Many bereaved parents say what they wanted most was for someone to acknowledge their baby and to ask about them. Say the baby's name if you know it. Offer something small and specific, like dropping off dinner on Thursday, rather than "let me know if you need anything". Come back in a few weeks, when the meals have stopped. If she would like to light a candle on 15 October, light one beside her.

One thing to do this week

Pick the one that feels possible: register for a Thursday session, save the Wave of Light link for 6:45pm on 15 October, or light a candle at 7pm wherever you are. On an ordinary day, our community is a place where UAE mums swap what helped. We also wrote about how a day like Mother's Day lands for many women: Mother's Day Is For More Women Than We Often Remember. Another awareness month, with support listed the same way: Breast Cancer Awareness Month UAE.
