Lollipops first

If you buy one thing, buy lollipops. Chupa Chups works out at about 26 fils a house and Torpedo at about 39 fils, and nothing melts in a bowl at the front door at 5pm.

Chewy, chocolate and one fruit

Haribo is the chewy pick for older kids, and Tiffany and Erko are the cheapest bags on the list. The two chocolate bags are for the grown-ups raiding the bowl too, so keep them indoors in the afternoon heat. Mandarins are the one option with no wrapper and no sugar. Haribo and the mandarins both showed as unavailable on 20 October, so look again before you plan around them.

The allergy-aware pick

YumEarth is one option for families who want a gelatin-free bag. The packs are individually wrapped, so handing them out is quick, and it is the one we would put in the bowl if you know a child with an allergy on your street.

How many pieces to buy

This is a rule of thumb, not a statistic. Count the children you expect, give each two pieces, and add a fifth on top for the ones who come back with a sibling. Thirty children is 72 pieces, so two 35-piece lollipop bags cover you.

Halal, gelatin and allergy labels

Gelatin is the usual question with gummies and marshmallows. Read the ingredients on the pack in your hand: "beef gelatine - halal" or pectin is clear, an unspecified "gelatine" is not. Where the listing is silent, as with Erko and Tiffany, the pack decides. Recipes and factories change.

Younger siblings in the queue

Babies and toddlers should not be given round or hard sweets, jelly beans, caramels or gummy candy, as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists them among the choking hazards for young children. If a toddler is walking the street with an older brother or sister, ask the grown-up before you hand over a lollipop.

Before 31 October

Order this week so the bags arrive in time. If you are budgeting the month, our family budget plan has a line for exactly this kind of one-off. Planning a party at home instead? The first birthday party ideas cover simple treat bags too, and the cool-season outdoor ideas are a good follow-up for Saturday daytime. Anything on offer for your family is in /deals, and events are in the calendar.
