Kids Smartwatch in the UAE: What to Check Before You Buy

Calling and location without a phone: SIM and school rules in the UAE, the privacy question, and two watches plus Apple's route worth checking.

A mum and her young daughter at the front door of a townhouse before school, the girl showing the watch on her wrist.

If your child is not ready for a phone but you want to reach them, and see where they are, a smartwatch with calling is the usual middle step. Three things decide whether it works in the UAE: a SIM or eSIM that an operator will actually activate, your child's school rules, and what the watch's app does with your child's data. The watch itself comes last.

Three routes to check

The myFirst S4 was AED 799 on Amazon.ae on 27 October 2026. Prices and stock change, so look before you decide.

SIM or no SIM

A calling watch needs a mobile line. e& launched a Kids SIM in December 2024 at AED 49 or AED 99 a month, where you choose which numbers your child can call, and parental controls come free with it. e& does not say that SIM works in other brands of kids' watch, so ask before you order one.

Apple's route is the one with a UAE operator page behind it. "Apple Watch for Your Kids" gives your child their own number, but only for existing e& customers, finished at an e& store with your Emirates ID. It needs a cellular Apple Watch SE or Series 4 or later, plus an iPhone for the set-up.

For the myFirst watches, ask e& or du to confirm they will activate the watch's eSIM before you buy.

Will school allow it?

For many families this decides everything. Under Ministry rules, a phone found on a student at school is confiscated, for a month on the first offence, and parents sign Form 24. Arabian Business reports that several schools have extended the same restrictions to smartwatches. Private schools outside the Ministry curriculum write their own device rules.

So ask your school in writing before you buy, and ask about calling, cameras and any "school mode".

What to look for in the watch

  • Calling to approved numbers only, set by you in the app
  • An SOS button that alerts your chosen contacts
  • GPS location you can check in the app (accuracy varies, indoors especially)
  • A school or class mode that mutes the watch in lessons
  • Water resistance for the pool and the beach
  • Daily charging: myFirst says about a day of normal use, so add it to the bedtime routine

A watch does not make a child safe

It helps you reach your child and your child reach you. It does not replace a handover at the school gate or an adult who knows where your child is. Location can lag or be wrong, a battery can die at 2pm, and a child can take the watch off.

Privacy: who sees your child's location?

A watch with GPS and messages collects movement patterns, voice notes and chats. Consumer Reports in the US found some kids' watches weak on privacy disclosures or without multi-factor sign-in, and makers held to stricter global standards, such as Apple, tended to score better. Check that the app has a privacy policy you can read, asks for a strong password and lets you delete your child's data.

The myFirst watches

myFirst makes watches only for children. Its own UAE page says the watches have no open internet or social media, calls only to contacts you approve, and no feature for parents to listen in. That is the brand's description, so read the app's privacy page before you pay.

Of the two on Amazon.ae, the S4 has a camera and the R2 does not. A camera is worth a conversation with your school, because the Ministry rules treat unauthorised photographs of pupils and staff seriously. Pick the listing for the model above: some myFirst listings on Amazon.ae are the US version, sold with a US SIM.

The Apple Watch route

If you already use an iPhone and e&, this is the best documented route in the UAE. Your child gets their own number, contacts you approve and Emergency SOS. Some Apple Watch features are not available under this set-up, mostly health sensors, and the e& page lists them.

Unfamiliar brands

Amazon.ae returns more than 300 results for GPS kids' watches, many from brands with a handful of reviews and no support page. We have not picked any. If you look at one, check the seller, the app's privacy policy and whether it sets up on a UAE network.

What to do this week

Ask the school what is allowed. Then ask e& or du what line the watch would need. If both answers are yes, compare the three routes above.
