Kids' Hand Luggage Checklist for Flights From the UAE: Pack by What They Do

What to pack for kids on a plane, sorted by what a 2 to 8-year-old actually does up there: watch, make, eat, drink and stay found. No crayons under the seat.

A mum and her young son in airplane seats, the boy painting a picture book on the tray table.

For a child aged 2 to 8, the carry-on that works is sorted by what they will do on the flight: watch, make, eat, drink and stay found. Pack one thing for each, keep everything mess-free, and the seat-back screen stops being your only plan. UAE families fly more than most, and with the December break and National Day trips coming, this is the list to order from now. Prices and stock move, so check the current price on each page, and two items can take longer to arrive, so order early.

Ages and safety claims below are the brands' own. Read the age on each box before you pay.

Watch: headphones that fit small ears

Most children will watch a lot, so the headphones matter more than the tablet. The JBL Jr 320 is wired, which is the point: it works with the seat-back screen and never needs charging mid-flight. JBL says the volume never goes above 85 dB, and the headset folds flat into a backpack pocket.

Make: four quiet activities that leave no trace

A child who is making something stays seated. The Water Wow! book and the Crayola Color Wonder markers (both ages 3 and up) leave nothing behind but a damp page or a coloured one. The Melissa & Doug sticker pad has 150-plus reusable stickers and a desert oasis scene among five backgrounds. The Usborne airport book is for ages 3 to 5, with wipe-clean pages for the flight home. For the Magna-Tiles set, read the age on the box first, since magnets are small. Hape's fishing game, from age 2, is the cheap one for a toddler.

Eat and drink without the spill

The Munchkin Snack Catcher has soft flaps, fits a cup holder and holds up to 9 oz, so crackers survive turbulence. The Contigo bottle's valve is built so it does not spill even with the spout open, says Contigo, which helps when ears pop and children drink more than expected. At DXB, liquids in hand baggage must be 100 ml or less per item, up to one litre in total, with exemptions for baby milk and food, and for medication. So an empty bottle goes through security, and you fill it after.

Their own bag, and a spare outfit

A Trunki ride-on is listed at 47 x 32 x 21 cm, so it fits inside a cabin limit like Emirates' 55 x 38 x 22 cm (7 kg in the first tier on its page, and it varies with the route). Check your own airline's size rules before you buy. Inside, give each child one VAGREEZ cube with a spare T-shirt and a plastic bag for the wet ones. The cube is easier to find than a loose pile in a stuffed backpack.

Stay found: the AirTag

An AirTag goes in a checked bag or the stroller. It needs an iPhone, so skip it for an Android family. Apple lists location sharing with more than 50 airline partners if a bag goes missing.

What to check before you pack

  • Your airline's cabin size and weight limits. Emirates guarantees children under 13 a seat next to an adult, but baggage rules differ by carrier.
  • An inflatable leg rest: check the airline first, so it is not on this list.
  • Delivery dates: the Magna-Tiles set and the Contigo bottle can be imported, so look at the arrival date on the page.

Before you order

Work backwards from the flight, and give imported items two weeks. A trial run at home helps: let your child open and close the bag alone. For a first outing with a baby, Flying With a Baby From the UAE comes before this list. The UAE public holidays page shows the long weekends, the school holiday dates show the winter break, and the family travel guide covers the rest. Offers for families are on our deals page.
