UAE Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Mum and Baby

What to pack for you (vaginal birth or C-section), your baby, your partner and an older child, the documents for the birth certificate, and the car seat rule for the drive home.

The short version: pack your bag at least three weeks before your due date, with clothes and comforts for you, a going-home outfit for your baby, snacks for your partner, and one folder of documents: both parents' passports, Emirates IDs and your attested marriage certificate. Have the car seat fitted before you leave for the hospital. Only 1 in 20 babies arrive on their due date.

Hospitals differ in what they supply (nappies, pads, baby clothes), so ask yours at your next antenatal visit.

For you: pack for every birth

  • Clothes: 2 or 3 comfortable, front-opening pyjama tops or nightshirts, a light robe if you like one, and loose clothes for going home. Dark colours hide stains.
  • Bras: 2 or 3 comfortable ones, nursing bras if you expect to breastfeed, and breast pads
  • Basics: 5 or 6 pairs of knickers (disposable ones help) and 2 packets of maternity pads
  • Comfort: a straw bottle, lip balm, hair ties, flip-flops, your own toiletries and pillow, an eye mask
  • Practical: phone and a long charging cable, maternity notes and ID, any regular medicines, a small snack if allowed

One mum in our community found a small clip-on fan very useful after the birth; ask your hospital whether it is allowed in the room.

If you are having a C-section

Packing for a planned caesarean is mostly the same. NHS maternity units suggest loose nightwear, maternity pads, and high-waisted knickers, so the elastic does not rub on your scar. Ask your doctor how long you are likely to stay and pack for that, plus a spare night.

For your baby

  • Two or three outfits in newborn or 0 to 3 month sizes, including the going-home one
  • One light receiving blanket, shawl or muslin
  • A spare outfit in case of leaks
  • A hat, mittens, socks or booties
  • Nappies and wipes, if your hospital does not supply them

For dad (or your birth partner)

  • Change of clothes and a wash kit
  • Phone and charger, snacks and drinks
  • Any medicines, spare glasses or lenses
  • Change for parking and vending machines

For a big brother or sister

Pack a small gift "from the baby", wrapped, so it is there when your older child walks in: a book, a soft toy or a colouring pad.

The UAE paperwork: the folder that matters most

This is the part generic lists miss. For residents, the birth certificate is processed through the hospital where your baby is born, or the health authority in your emirate, and it needs:

  • Attested copy of your marriage certificate, translated into Arabic if it is in another language
  • Originals and copies of both parents' passports
  • The hospital's birth notification and discharge summary (the hospital gives you these)

Pack both Emirates IDs and your insurance card too. If your marriage certificate was issued abroad and is not attested yet, start now, not at 38 weeks.

The deadlines: you have 30 days to register the birth. You then have 120 days from the birth to sort your baby's birth certificate, passport, Emirates ID and residence visa; after that a fee of AED 100 per day applies and your baby cannot leave the country.

In Abu Dhabi, birth certificates are issued digitally through TAMM: the hospital notifies you, and you upload the documents and pay online. UAE nationals can use Mabrouk Ma Yak, which bundles the birth certificate, passport and Emirates ID. Our guide to trusted UAE government sources shows where to check updates.

The car seat for going home

UAE traffic rules require a child seat for children under four, so your baby needs one for the very first drive. Dubai's RTA guidance says babies under 1 year and under 10 kg go in a rear-facing seat in the back, never on a lap. Fit it a few weeks early and read the manufacturer's instructions.
